What is bonding?

Bonding is a cosmetic procedure in dentistry that uses a photopolymer material to correct dental issues. The procedure involves applying a composite material to the tooth surface, which is then cured using an LED lamp.

Unlike the placement of veneers or dental crowns, bonding does not require the natural tooth to be filed down, making it a gentle alternative for tooth restoration. It is suitable for healthy teeth requiring cosmetic procedures.

Types of bonding

There are various applications depending on your needs.

Types of bonding:

  • Direct composite bonding – applied directly to the tooth in a single visit.
  • Aesthetic bonding – improving the colour and shape.
  • Structural bonding – restoration of broken teeth or following the removal of tooth decay.

Each type has a specific application depending on individual needs.

What are the benefits?

Bonding offers a number of advantages.

Aesthetic results

It achieves a natural look, close to a Hollywood smile, by correcting the colour, shape and size. The composite material used for aesthetic fillings is selected to match the shade of natural teeth.

Minimally invasive

It preserves as much of the tooth structure as possible without grinding. Ideal for preserving natural teeth.

Speed and affordability

The procedure is completed in a single visit and is affordable. An excellent option for a quick improvement.

Versatility

Corrects various issues ranging from dental jewellery (metal elements or stones that are bonded to the tooth) to tooth abrasion, cracks and gaps.

When is it necessary to undergo the procedure?

Bonding is suitable for slightly chipped teeth caused by an accident or wear and tear. It is excellent for gaps between teeth that do not require orthodontic treatment. When teeth are unevenly shaped or discoloured, bonding effectively transforms them.

After tartar removal and professional cleaning, various aesthetic issues can be corrected. It is suitable for replacing old fillings with aesthetic ones and for early-stage tooth wear. It is not suitable for advanced tooth decay, periodontitis or damaged teeth requiring dental implants.

Bonding is an excellent solution for transforming your smile without invasive procedures. The procedure is affordable, aesthetically pleasing and delivers visible results. How does the preparation for treatment work?

Success depends on proper preparation.

Initial consultation

During the first visit, an examination is carried out, dental problems are assessed and the desired result is discussed. When planning the smile, the appropriate shade is selected.

Professional cleaning

A professional cleaning, which includes the removal of tartar, is recommended. This ensures a clean surface for bonding.

Preparation of the tooth surface

The tooth surface is treated with a special gel that prepares the microstructure of the enamel for a strong bond with the composite. Anaesthesia is administered if necessary, although the procedure is painless.

Post-operative care and recovery period

After bonding, follow the medical recommendations for long-term durability. Avoid hard foods for the first 24–48 hours and limit colouring drinks during the first week. Maintain excellent oral hygiene.

For dental prevention, a professional clean every 6 months is recommended. With proper oral hygiene, bonding can retain its aesthetic appearance for up to 5–10 years.

Are there any risks?

Bonding is a safe procedure with minimal risks in a modern dental clinic. The composite material is biocompatible. Some patients may experience temporary sensitivity, which subsides within a few days.

Slight discolouration of the material can be corrected by polishing, and breakage due to trauma is easily repaired. When all dental services are performed using modern equipment, professional execution minimises the risks.

Frequently asked questions

Does the bonding procedure hurt?

No, the procedure is virtually painless and in most cases does not require anaesthesia, unless deeper cleaning of the tooth is necessary.

When should bonding be postponed?

The procedure should be postponed in cases requiring prior treatment – active gum inflammation, untreated tooth decay or active periodontitis.

How long does the procedure take?

Bonding usually takes between one hour per tooth, depending on the amount of work required.
